Two documentary series have been released at the same time – both brilliant in my view – centred on the brutal murder Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1986. Set against the beautiful, untamed backdrop of the hills of West Cork, this case deals with so many deeply searching human questions: the nature of guilt and conscience, the overwhelming power of fear in its ability to keep people silent and the unspoken connection between child and mother. Featuring interviews with those closest to the case and filmed with her family’s full blessing, even though many questions are still left unanswered, these series serve as a sensitive and loving tribute to Sophie.
